Ryan Downey today releases his jaw-droppingly beautiful debut album Running, out now via Barely Dressed Records / Remote Control. Downey has created a musical world unlike any that you’ve heard, illuminating an artist who has the power to break your heart, mend it and set it on fire, all at the same time.
There's something inherently classic - an elegance - to Downey's blend of pop, rock and folk. Reminiscent of Bryan Ferry or Leonard Cohen, his voice transports you somewhere deeply familiar. However, the songs are punctured and detailed by unmistakably contemporary sounds. He is an artist uniquely capable of balancing cheek and sincerity, classicism and swagger and grandeur and restraint all within a single, composed breath.
Running was recorded across New York and Melbourne - at the Brooklyn studio of Zoe Randell andSteven Hassett of duo Luluc, with preliminary tracking done at Headgap Studios in Preston, Victoria. It was produced by Hassett, who Downey met when supporting Luluc on their 2014 tour. The two quickly became friends, both recognising a kinship in their musical tastes and visions. It was a perfect pairing with the two of them embarking on an intense five weeks of recording “Steve has an amazing, innovative ear and could always understand where I wanted to take something, how to achieve it and more importantly, when to stop me making the mistake of taking it there at all.”
