Releases

Transportive and with a penchant for drama, Naarm/Melbourne’s Taylah Carroll lays the world before her listener on new single ‘Intentions’, out now on [PIAS] Australia. Produced by Tim Harvey (Gena Rose Bruce, Jade Imagine), the track boasts a contrast between sarcasm and vulnerability, directness and ownership; all placed within a full-circle acknowledgment and interpretation of events within a relationship. Following its premiere on triple j Unearthed's TOPS overnight, the single arrives today alongside a Nick Mckk & Taylah Carroll-directed video, filmed at a local scout hall against a hand sewn back-drop.

LISTEN

On the track, Taylah says “I wrote this song after I asked someone what their romantic intentions had been - to which they replied, they had “none at all”. It’s written in the most acutely direct and sarcastic ‘voice’ I’ve ever used - I think it’s this directness and subsequent vulnerability that implored me to lean into what feels like an alter egoistic character. I wish I were as bold as the woman singing this song!

Combining a careful balance of playfulness and sarcasm, the ‘Intentions’ video was based around the alter-egoistic character that came out during the filming of previous single ‘To Please Ya’. “I wanted to take that unashamedly expressive and androgynous character, and bring them onto stage, and into my music more broadly,” says Taylah. For the video, Taylah collaborated with sustainable Melbourne-based brand, Par Moi, who create-made-to-order pieces from deadstock and surplus materials.

‘Intentions’ follows Taylah Carroll’s first single of 2022, unapologetic breakup song ‘Have A Party On Me’. Support for the release was garnered from The Revue, Scope Magazine, Music Feeds, Sounds of Oz, Spotify, Amazon Music, as well as triple j Unearthed & community radio.

Hallmarked by commanding vocals and seamless transitions between vulnerability and strength, Taylah’s music melds confessional and dreamy alt-folk, with pop sensibilities and introspective lyricism. Lyrics form the centerpiece of her craft, exploring themes of self-actualisation, growth and loss, rich with brooding contemplation and punctuated by observational wit. The dissection of what she sees and hears around her, whether observing a friend mid-breakup or describing a childhood walk through the suburbs is by turns charming and withering.
